Hello! Cheryl here – gardener and head of recipe development on a one acre homestead on Canada’s west coast. I’m passionate about growing, cooking, and eating plants.

My family has been farming and homesteading for generations, but over the years, we have been challenging the idea of what that looks like. Using no-dig, veganic permaculture practices, we work at growing as much of what we eat in as sustainable a way as possible.

Our small flock of rescue chickens and ducks serve dual purpose as both companion animals and green waste composters.

When not in the garden, I’m in the kitchen, tweaking old family favourites and devising delicious new ways to eat what we grow.

Posts dated before 2017 are from my old blog, Free Range Living. You can find all of the original content in the archives.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

I almost gave up on growing sweet potatoes last ye I almost gave up on growing sweet potatoes last year, and I'm so glad I gave them one last shot. They're tons tastier than store bought, and have stored all winter with no problems.

Today I buried three nice ones in soil and set them on a heat mat next to the pepper seedlings. They'll grow roots, and then shoots, which I'll cut off and root in water before potting up.

I think they've earned extra space in this year's garden!🍠

Our favorite sushi bowl recipe is finally here! Tr Our favorite sushi bowl recipe is finally here! Trust me when I say you need this in your life! (Recipe link in profile.)

We make a lot of different sauces and dressings, so when Masontops, the maker of one of my favorite fermentation tools (pickle pipes) reached out and offered to let me try their Multi-top jar lids, I jumped at chance.

Our homemade sauces always end up in a mason jar, so these have been a fantastic addition to our kitchen. Not only are they cute and practical, but the spout snaps tightly shut, so there's no danger of spillage when shaking the jar to recombine a sauce before using it.

Masontops has kindly offered to send a pair to one of you to try. If you'd like to be entered for the chance to try them for yourself:

1) Like this post and follow @masontops and @eatwhatyousow

2) Share reel to your stories for an extra entry (be sure to tag me so I see it!).

(There's an extra swipe to enter in my stories, today only, Dec. 2nd!)

Contest closes on Friday, Dec. 9 at 11:59 pm, PST. Winner will be announced in stories and contacted by DM.

Giveaway only open to those 18 and older, living in the US and Canada. This giveaway is not affiliated with Instagram.

Turning green tomatoes into a holiday treat! Find Turning green tomatoes into a holiday treat! Find the recipe for my mom's famous Green Tomato Mincemeat through the link in my profile or at www.eatwhatyousow.ca.
Mincemeat is one of my favorite things, not only t Mincemeat is one of my favorite things, not only to eat, but to preserve. It makes good use of two things that we have in abundance at this time of year (apples and green tomatoes), and a batch usually sees us through several holidays' worth of tarts.

This is the version that my mom has been making my whole life (it was my grandmother's recipe), and I've never tasted its equal. I have found that @miyokoscreamery cultured (non-dairy) butter is the best here if you're veganising, as others don't have the same richness and body.

Mince tarts are second only to butter tarts in my book. What's your Holiday "must have"?

(If you're interested in making your own mincemeat, the link to the recipe is in my profile or at www.eatwhatyousow.ca.)

The beets are in cold storage along with the apples and cabbages (no root cellar, just a spare fridge), peppers have been chopped and frozen, and the tomatoes will be eaten as they ripen (except for the really green ones, which I will be turning into mincemeat tomorrow).

Seeds have been arriving for a while now, so there's nothing to do but dream of next year's garden for the next few months! Happy fall!πŸ‚

This is the face of the broodiest floof.πŸ˜… Kiwi This is the face of the broodiest floof.πŸ˜…

Kiwi is a Lavender Orpington, a heritage breed hen, which can go broody several times a year (they lay a clutch of eggs and then sit for days, weeks, or even months in the hopes of hatching some babies). Modern layers have had this bred out of them, as it interrupts the laying cycle and reduces the number of eggs they lay.

We don't let our girls hatch eggs (the world has enough unwanted roosters), but that doesn't stop this cutie from trying!

- Bobis d'Albenga and Straight & Narrow (@treeandtwig )

First batch of sauerkraut with the first of this y First batch of sauerkraut with the first of this year's cabbages (and part of a store bought purple one). My @cabbage_shredder makes quick work of shredding a whole cabbage, and this came together in just a few minutes.

I cheated and added a bit of liquid from a previous batch to inoculate it with bacteria and get the ferment going faster (some call this "back-slopping"), but the purple juice in the bowl all came from the fresh cabbage through kneading the cabbage with salt. It always amazes me how much it gives up.

A little brown parchment covers the kraut, followed by a glass weight, and a @masontops pickle pipe.

This batch can't be ready soon enough!
