We’re Out!

We’ve finally finished our move, and have almost settled in at my mother’s place (which is where we’ll be staying while our house is being built).

It was kind of sad to leave our little house (it was just under 800 square feet at the best of times, though it seemed much smaller in the dead of a dismal Vancouver winter). We put a lot of love and hard work into it over the course of 2 1/2 years, never expecting that we would be leaving it so soon.

We were fortunate to be able to take all 7 of our fruit trees with us, and they’re waiting in the shade beside my mom’s house for their big move to the property. We’re in the middle of a heatwave at the moment though, so we might wait until things cool off a bit (assuming they will).
Our cats were none too pleased about being uprooted, and Shadow ended up jumping to freedom from an open window 10 feet off the ground. We were worried that she’d get lost and we’d never see her again, but at 4:00 this morning she showed up, meowing furiously outside the window to be let back in.

J. at his 5th birthday party (astronaut theme).

Today also happens to be our son’s 8th birthday. We’re heading out shortly for a few rounds of glow in the dark bowling to celebrate.

I just had to share this lovely invitation that we saw while dropping off the last of the garbage on the final day of our move. I suggested it as a backup to bowling for my son’s birthday, but for some reason he didn’t go for it.

  • I can’t believe J is already 8!!! Where did the time go? I’m so glad you were able to take your fruit trees with you. We’re in the middle of a heat wave too. I hope it doesn’t last for too long or I’ll have to go for a swim in the lake.

  • I also wanted to say congrats on your move. We are looking to buy property outside of town, and I often wonder if we could manage a complete move (i.e. leave town for good) without me losing my community. I’ll be reading eagerly to hear how you’re adjusting…(also, if you’re comfortable with it, could you tell me what area you are moving to?)

  • Hi Nio – We’re hoping construction will take no longer than 3 or 4 months, but are allowing for 6 or so. We’re doing most of the finishing ourselves, so that may be ongoing for years!

Carla – I know, kids grow up too fast.
I must be getting really warm in Nelson. It rained last night though, so it’s feeling nice and fresh this morning.

Midlife Traveller – That does sound interesting! It just struck me as kind of funny, I didn’t really put much thought into what it might involve.
Thanks for the congrats! I was worried about leaving our wonderful homeschooling community and family too, but I think we’ve found the perfect balance. I’m not sure if I’m going to post the location (just because it’s a much smaller community and I’m paranoid), but if you want to send me your email address in a comment, I can contact you directly about it (I won’t actually publish the comment with your address though!).

  • Wow, its happening!

My ds’s 8th is coming up soon too. He’s undecided at the moment but maybe I can convince him space would be a great theme.(: I think he would go for the garbage though.

I would love to hear from you!
